Nestled within the enchanting Jardin des Plantes, the Ménagerie is one of the oldest zoos in the world, having opened its gates in 1794. Home to 150 species, nearly 40% of which are threatened, this quaint zoo provides a unique opportunity to witness the diversity of animal life in thoughtfully designed enclosures.
Unique Animal Encounters
As you wander through this historic zoo, you’ll encounter captivating species like the elusive red pandas, who only come down from their trees to change branches. Don’t miss the majestic snow leopards, perfectly adapted to their cold, mountainous habitat with their mottled fur and long tails.
Stars of the Ménagerie
One of the stars of the Ménagerie is Nénette, a beloved orangutan who celebrated her 50th birthday in 2019. The zoo also features intriguing species like Malayan tapirs, Seychelles tortoises, and playful binturongs. Many of the animals here were born in captivity or are part of vital breeding programs designed to bolster endangered species. Successful reintroductions, such as the Golden Lion Tamarin and the Arabian Oryx, highlight the zoo’s commitment to conservation.
Educational Experiences
The Ménagerie also serves as an educational hub, offering workshops and guided tours to deepen visitors’ understanding of biodiversity. Seasonal events and interactive experiences ensure that guests of all ages leave with a greater appreciation for wildlife.
