Place de la Contrescarpe

Highlights

Nestled in the vibrant 5th arrondissement, the Place de la Contrescarpe invites visitors to immerse themselves in the charm of Parisian life, surrounded by bustling cafés and historic architecture.

About

The Place de la Contrescarpe, measuring approximately forty meters in diameter, is a delightful public square located at the convergence of Rue Mouffetard, Rue Lacépède, and Rue du Cardinal-Lemoine.

This central square serves as a vital intersection among four distinct administrative neighborhoods: Saint-Victor, Jardin-des-Plantes, Val-de-Grâce, and Sorbonne.

The square features a circular traffic island, dominated by a charming public fountain that enhances its appeal. Once a hub for local residents, it has transformed into a popular destination for tourists seeking a taste of authentic Parisian culture.

Historical Roots: From Counterscarp to Contemporary

The name Contrescarpe references the counterscarp, an embankment outside the moat that once surrounded the Wall of Philip II Augustus.

This picturesque square, opened in 1852, was formed through the demolition of a cluster of buildings that previously occupied the space. Though modernized, remnants of its historical significance can still be seen in the façades that hint at its past, including the site of the former café “Au Nègre joyeux,” which has become a subject of historical reflection due to its controversial past.

A Contemporary Oasis: Cafés and Ambiance

Today, the Place de la Contrescarpe is adorned with a lively assortment of cafés that offer both locals and visitors a chance to relax and soak in the atmosphere.

The square’s recent renovations have aimed to enhance pedestrian access while addressing challenges such as narrow sidewalks and noise pollution from nightlife. Despite its modern appeal, the square maintains a sense of intimacy, making it an ideal spot to unwind under the shade of its trees.
