Place de la Nation

Highlights

Place de la Nation, formerly known as the Place du Trône, is a vibrant public square located at the intersection of the 11th and 12th arrondissements of Paris.

About

Echoes of History: From Royal Ceremonies to Revolutionary Change

Originally a vast grassy area, Place de la Nation earned its first name when a trône was erected here for the grand entry of Louis XIV and Marie-Thérèse in 1660. As time passed, the square witnessed profound transformations, particularly during the French Revolution when it was renamed Place du Trône-Renversé, reflecting the turbulent political changes of the era.

This historical shift set the stage for future events, including a dark chapter when the guillotine operated here, claiming numerous lives. Today, it stands as a testament to liberty, marked by the inscription “Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité,” which graces public buildings across France.

Artistry in Motion: The Triumph of the Republic

At the heart of the square lies the striking Triumph of the Republic, a bronze sculpture crafted by Jules Dalou. This monumental piece was inaugurated in 1889, commemorating the centenary of the French Revolution. The statue depicts Liberty leading a chariot pulled by two lions, flanked by allegorical figures representing Justice, Abundance, and Labor. Each character contributes to the narrative of strength and unity, emphasizing the spirit of the French Republic.

The central location of the statue, oriented towards Bastille, creates a powerful visual axis often utilized for public demonstrations, symbolizing the enduring relationship between the people and their government.

Urban Renewal: A Breath of Fresh Air

In recent years, the Place de la Nation underwent a significant transformation aimed at enhancing pedestrian access and environmental sustainability.

Spearheaded by former Mayor Anne Hidalgo, this initiative reconfigured the central ring road, reducing its diameter from 26 to 12 meters. The square now boasts expansive pedestrian areas, bike lanes, and lush green spaces, inviting Parisians and visitors alike to linger and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere. Temporary installations and local input shaped the ongoing development, making the square a true community hub.
