Parc de la Légion d’Honneur

Highlights

Located in the historic heart of Saint-Denis, the Parc de la Légion d'Honneur offers a serene retreat with a mix of green spaces, artistic installations, and a rich history tied to the French Republic's National Order of the Legion of Honor.

About

The Parc de la Légion d’Honneur, once part of the grounds of the Saint-Denis Abbey, has a long and storied history. In 1809, the site was repurposed as the Maison d’Éducation de la Légion d’Honneur, a school established by Napoleon I for the daughters of Legion of Honor recipients. This transformation also marked the creation of a vast green space designed for both educational and recreational purposes.

Over time, portions of the park were gradually opened to the public, and today, its southern third is accessible year-round, while the central area is open in the summer months.

A Family-Friendly Urban Oasis

Spanning over 24 hectares, the park is a haven for families and those seeking relaxation in an urban setting. It features lush lawns, scenic walking paths, and dedicated children’s play areas that make it a popular spot for both locals and visitors.

The park also hosts various cultural events, including the annual Tulip Festival every April, where vibrant tulip displays bring a burst of color to the landscape.

Sustainable Green Space with a Rich Ecological Focus

Visitors to the park can explore not only its beauty but also its commitment to sustainability. The park is home to a variety of wildlife, including squirrels and pollinating insects, who play vital roles in maintaining the local ecosystem.

The installation of an insect hotel provides a safe haven for pollinators, while birdhouses attract local species such as the blue tit, which nests in the park’s trees. Educational panels throughout the park offer insights into the biodiversity of the area, making it an ideal spot for nature enthusiasts.

Art and History in the Heart of the Park

The Parc de la Légion d’Honneur also houses a rich collection of art and historical monuments. At the center of the park stands a striking bronze statue of the Chevalier Bayard, a French knight, sculpted in 1895 by Aristide Croisy.

This statue, along with the music pavilion built in 1895, adds a layer of cultural depth to the park’s natural beauty.
