Passage Ponceau

Highlights

Passage Ponceau is a lesser-known passage with a quiet and unassuming charm.

About

The Passage du Ponceau is a testament to the urban evolution of Paris, transitioning from an elegant shopping gallery to a utilitarian space for fashion warehouses. Despite the changes and reduction in its length, it retains historical charm thanks to recent restorations and its well-preserved architecture.

Today, this passage is a private way, measuring 92 meters in length and 2.5 meters in width.

Restoration and Architecture

Located opposite the Passage du Caire, the Passage du Ponceau has recently been restored, particularly its glass roof, through a partnership with the City of Paris. This covered passage has two floors under the glass roof. The upper register of the façades and the ceilings under the transverse buildings are relatively well preserved, offering a glimpse into 19th-century architecture.

Origin of the Name

The name “Passage du Ponceau” comes from its proximity to rue du Ponceau. The term “ponceau” or “poncel” refers to a small bridge that once existed over a sewer, which was covered in 1605 near rue Saint-Denis.

Address and Opening Hours

The Passage du Ponceau is located at 212, rue Saint-Denis and 119, boulevard de Sébastopol, in the 2nd arrondissement of Paris. It is open from Monday to Friday, from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
