Opened in 2010, LE BAL is an independent venue located in a former dance hall behind Place de Clichy, Paris. Founded by Raymond Depardon and Diane Dufour, it serves as a platform for contemporary visual arts, particularly in the fields of photography, video, cinema, and new media. The venue aims to explore different ways of representing reality, offering exhibitions, debates, and educational programs.
A Hub for Education and Social Engagement
LE BAL’s educational program, La Fabrique du Regard, was established in 2008 to teach young people about the power of imagery. Over the years, it has trained over 30,000 young people, reaching across 275 neighborhoods from primary school to high school. This program strives to develop critical thinkers, helping young audiences engage with the world around them through images.
Historical Background
Before becoming LE BAL, the building was a lively cabaret and a dance hall in the 1920s, known as “Chez Isis.” Later, it became the largest PMU (pari mutuel urbain) in France until 1992. The space was abandoned for years until the City of Paris acquired it in 2006 to transform it into an exhibition venue. The renovation, completed after three years of work, was entrusted to architects Caroline Barat and Thomas Dubuisson.
Today’s LE BAL
Today, LE BAL offers a dynamic space where contemporary artists tackle urgent political and aesthetic issues. The exhibitions encourage reflection on the overabundance of images in our society, exploring various narratives and artistic practices, including essays, reports, and photojournalism. Visitors can explore thought-provoking works that challenge traditional representations of the world and its complexities.
