Highlights

About

The Statue of Marshal Joseph Joffre is an imposing equestrian sculpture honoring the French military leader, inaugurated on June 10, 1939.

Crafted by sculptor Maxime Real del Sarte, this statue stands as a tribute to Joffre’s pivotal role during World War I, particularly his leadership at the Battle of the Marne, which helped turn the tide of the war in favor of the Allies.

A Monument to Military Leadership

The campaign to erect a monument to Joffre began in 1936 when the president of the organizing committee proposed the statue’s location at Porte Maillot, where Joffre was welcomed during the Victory Parade on July 28, 1919.

After careful consideration, the city council chose a site near the steps leading to the Champ-de-Mars, a location that reinforces Joffre’s connection to French military history.

Unveiling a National Icon

The inauguration was timed for the end of 1938, with Real del Sarte seeking necessary permissions to complete the statue using granite sourced for the project. The unveiling ceremony, attended by President Albert Lebrun, solidified the statue’s significance as a national symbol.

Originally, two bronze bas-reliefs adorned the granite pedestal, depicting important moments from Joffre’s military career, emphasizing his contributions to France during a tumultuous period.

A Strategic Location

Positioned at the end of the Champ-de-Mars, the statue of Marshal Joffre faces the École Militaire and aligns with the equestrian statue of Marshal Foch at the Place du Trocadéro. This strategic location not only highlights Joffre’s prominence in French history but also situates the statue within the broader context of France’s military legacy.

In 2021, the statue became part of the area surrounding the Grand Palais Éphémère, further enhancing its visibility and significance.
