Where Parisian Sports Heritage Meets Modern Ambitions
Nestled in the 16th arrondissement on the edge of Boulogne-Billancourt, the Stade Pierre de Coubertin has a storied past and remains a premier venue for sports and cultural events in Paris.
Originally inaugurated in 1937 during the Exposition Universelle, the stadium has evolved to host major sports and cultural gatherings, reflecting both the rich heritage of French athletics and the forward momentum of modern sports.
A Multifaceted Arena with a Rich History
The Stade Pierre de Coubertin first opened its doors as part of the 1937 Exposition Universelle, gaining immediate renown by hosting the French men’s volleyball and basketball teams. This early success laid the groundwork for the stadium to become France’s first indoor multi-sport venue, even withstanding the aftermath of WWII, after which it was rebuilt in 1946 and then renovated extensively in 1990.
Since the early 2000s, the Paris Saint-Germain Handball team has called the Stade Pierre de Coubertin its home. Here, thousands of fans gather to cheer on their team, immersing themselves in the electric energy of the arena, with a seating capacity reaching 4,836 for boxing events and 4,016 for handball or basketball games.
As the setting for landmark matches, including the Challenge Monal d’épée and the Challenge International de Paris de Fleuret in fencing, the stadium is deeply rooted in both French and global sports traditions.
A Dynamic Event Space Beyond Sports
The arena isn’t solely reserved for sports. It has also become a vibrant cultural hub, hosting events from hip-hop dance competitions to indoor rowing championships, including the celebrated Open de Paris d’aviron indoor each December.
For fans of international sports, the stadium is known for its Internationaux de France de Badminton (IFB), which is part of the global BWF Super Series circuit, attracting top-tier players from around the world.
Additionally, in recent years, the Stade Pierre de Coubertin has welcomed charity events like the Gol de Letra futsal tournament, which brings together celebrities and athletes for a good cause.
