AThe Jardin du 13 Novembre 2015 is located on Place Saint-Gervais, in the 4th arrondissement, close to the Hôtel de Ville. It was created in tribute to the 132 people killed in the coordinated attacks that struck Paris and Saint-Denis on the night of November 13, 2015, at sites including the Bataclan, several restaurants and bars, and the Stade de France.
The location was chosen deliberately by victims’ associations, 13onze15 Fraternité-Vérité and Life for Paris, as neutral ground, a place close to the affected sites but not one that was struck itself.
Design and History
The garden was designed by the Paris-based landscape architecture firm Wagon Landscaping, with landscape artist Gilles Clément taking part as guest artist, and historian Jean-Marc Dreyfus, a specialist in memory and testimony, contributing to the project. It’s conceived as a “jardin en mouvement,” a garden meant to evolve and change with the seasons rather than remain fixed.
The names of the 132 victims are engraved on granite stelae within the garden.
