Molière Fountain

Highlights

The Fontaine Molière, inaugurated in 1844, honors the legendary playwright with a striking bronze statue and marble allegories. Located at the intersection of Rue Molière and Rue de Richelieu, it embodies France's first national public subscription for a commemorative monument to a civilian figure.

About

Nestled at the junction of Rue Molière and Rue de Richelieu in the 1st arrondissement of Paris, the Fontaine Molière (Molière Fountain) stands as a resplendent tribute to one of France’s most celebrated literary figures.

Erected in 1844, this monument not only serves as a decorative water feature but also as a testament to the enduring legacy of Molière, the illustrious playwright who forever changed the landscape of French theatre.

A Vision Realized: The Journey to Commemoration

The journey to the fountain’s creation began in 1838 with the demolition of the original Fontaine Richelieu, which obstructed traffic in the area.

Inspired by this change, Joseph Régnier, a member of the Comédie-Française, proposed a new monument dedicated to Molière, who had passed away in 1673 in a nearby residence.

This ambitious initiative marked the first national public subscription in France to fund a commemorative monument for a civilian figure, highlighting the cultural importance of Molière in French history.

Architectural Grandeur: A Collaborative Masterpiece

Designed under the watchful eye of architect Louis Visconti, the Fontaine Molière showcases the artistic collaboration of several skilled sculptors.

The centerpiece, a striking bronze statue of Molière seated beneath an imposing portico, was sculpted by Bernard-Gabriel Seurre and cast by the fonderie Eck et Durand.

Surrounding the statue are two exquisite marble allegories, Serious Comedy and Light Comedy, created by Jean-Jacques Pradier. These graceful figures hold scrolls that enumerate Molière’s most significant works, further cementing his influence on literature.

Symbolism in Design: The Lion’s Gaze

At the fountain’s base, lion masks spout water into a semi-circular basin, adding a touch of whimsy and vitality to the structure. This clever design element reflects the playfulness and depth of Molière’s works, serving as a reminder of his ability to intertwine humor with serious themes.

Restoration and Renewal: A Fountain for the Future

In early 2022, plans were announced for the restoration of the Fontaine Molière, with a budget of 300,000 euros allocated for the project. This renovation aims to restore the statues, enhance the lighting, and bring the fountain back to its former glory, ensuring that this homage to Molière continues to inspire future generations.
