About

Whether you’re a history buff, a fan of architecture, or simply looking for a tranquil spot to relax, the Square de la Tour-Saint-Jacques offers a unique blend of nature and history right in the heart of Paris.

A Monumental Heritage at the Heart of Paris

The Square de la Tour-Saint-Jacques is a charming park nestled in the lively Saint-Merri neighborhood, right between the Centre Pompidou and Notre-Dame de Paris.

This picturesque 6,016 m² park centers around the Saint-Jacques Tower, the only surviving element of the medieval Saint-Jacques-de-la-Boucherie Church, destroyed in 1797.

The tower, built between 1509 and 1523 in the flamboyant Gothic style, was once part of the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela, serving as a key departure point for via Turonensis. T

oday, the Tour Saint-Jacques stands proudly as a historical landmark and is the heart of the park.

A Tribute to Blaise Pascal and Gérard de Nerval

At the base of the tower, you’ll find a statue of Blaise Pascal, commemorating the famous French philosopher and scientist who conducted barometric experiments from the tower.

Installed in 1857, the statue was designed by Jules Cavelier and remains an essential part of the square’s historical charm. Not far from the tower, a Monument to Gérard de Nerval, a tribute to the poet’s tragic death, was added in 1955, marking a place of remembrance with a medallion and verses from his poem “El Desdichado.”

A Rich History of Restoration and Design

The square, initially created in 1856 by Adolphe Alphand as part of the Haussmannian urban transformation, was the first enclosed park in Paris.

Designed with elegant wrought iron fences, it was later restored in the late 1990s and again from 2006 to 2009, enhancing its beauty and adding new plantings like the mûrier blanc.

These efforts preserved the square’s historical charm while giving it a modern touch. Visitors can also admire the restored sculptures that decorate the tower, including statues of saints and gargoyles, symbols of the tower’s original grandeur.
