Parc Clichy-Batignolles – Martin Luther King

Highlights

The Parc Clichy-Batignolles - Martin Luther King is a green haven in Paris that offers a unique blend of natural beauty, sports facilities, and ecological innovation.

About

The Parc Martin Luther King, spanning 10 hectares in the Batignolles neighborhood (17th arrondissement), is an innovative public space that embodies sustainable development. Designed by the landscape architect Jacqueline Osty and her team, its creation began in 2004 and was completed in 2021.

This park was built on the grounds of an old freight railway station, leaving behind traces of its industrial past, which are now beautifully integrated into the design. The park is dedicated to Martin Luther King, the famous civil rights leader, in honor of his efforts against racial prejudice in the United States.

The park is organized into three main themes: seasons, sports, and water. These elements are reflected in various sections, from playgrounds and sports fields to water features like the biotope pond, which is rich with aquatic plants like nénuphars (water lilies), iris, and reeds. The pond not only adds aesthetic value but also serves an ecological purpose, filtering water through natural processes before it’s used for irrigation throughout the park. The park also promotes biodiversity, with native fruit trees in a dedicated orchard that supports local wildlife.

A Sanctuary for Relaxation and Recreation

One of the park’s most unique features is its large central lawn, which spans about 1 hectare and is gently undulating, with mounds that resemble a muscle, offering visitors a dynamic space for lounging, reading, or watching the surrounding landscape. These mounds, with heights ranging from 1 to 4 meters, provide different vantage points over the park. The playgrounds, including a skate park, basketball court, and areas for children, are well-designed, integrating seamlessly with the lush vegetation and providing a perfect spot for family activities.

The Jardin du Rail, a thematic garden commemorating the park’s railway history, offers relaxation spaces like lounge chairs and a children’s playground. The park also has a beautiful fruit orchard with apple, pear, and berry trees, creating a peaceful and ecologically rich environment. Another standout feature is the Forge Building, a renovated 19th-century structure that houses park facilities and includes eco-friendly features such as solar panels and rainwater harvesting systems.

A Tribute to Martin Luther King and the Children’s Memorial

Opened in December 2008, the park pays tribute to Martin Luther King, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, for his lifelong fight against racial injustice. Additionally, the park honors the memory of Jewish children who were deported during World War II, with a memorial erected by the Association for the Memory of Jewish Children Deported (AMEJD). This tribute gives the park a deeper sense of historical significance and cultural remembrance.
