The Yves Saint Laurent Museum offers an intimate look into the life and creations of one of the most influential designers of the 20th century.
This museum, which opened its doors in October 2017, occupies the very space where Yves Saint Laurent revolutionized haute couture for nearly 30 years. Through its 450 m² of exhibition space, visitors are immersed in thematic temporary exhibits showcasing the creative brilliance of the designer, alongside the unique collection preserved by the Fondation Pierre Bergé – Yves Saint Laurent.
More than just a fashion museum, it captures the spirit of a fashion era that defined an entire art of living.
The Creation of a Fashion Icon
The Yves Saint Laurent Museum stands as a landmark of fashion history, paying homage to the genius of Yves Saint Laurent and the collections that emerged from this legendary couture house. The space is not only a celebration of his artistry but also a testament to the process of haute couture, featuring prototypes, original sketches, and iconic designs like the women’s smoking jacket and the Mondrian dress.
The Historic Maison
The museum is housed in a Second Empire townhouse, where Yves Saint Laurent and his teams created masterpieces from 1974 until the fashion house closed in 2002. Here, visitors can step into the Studio, the heart of all his collections, and explore 5,000 dresses, 35,000 sketches, and various accessories that trace his career. The restored atelier offers a unique chance to see the very space where fashion history was made.
Temporary Exhibitions: Exploring Yves Saint Laurent’s Inspirations
The museum regularly hosts thematic temporary exhibitions, diving deep into Saint Laurent’s diverse inspirations. Current and past exhibitions, such as “Transparences, le pouvoir des matières” and “L’Asie rêvée d’Yves Saint Laurent”, reflect the designer’s artistry and his homage to various cultures. These exhibitions, often enriched with archival images, videos, and expert interviews, explore both his artistic process and his impact on the world of fashion.
A Space Designed for Immersion
Renowned scenographer Nathalie Crinière and decorator Jacques Grange have designed the exhibition spaces to evoke the original atmosphere of the couture house. This attention to detail allows visitors to fully immerse themselves in the world of Yves Saint Laurent and witness the evolution of haute couture over the decades.
