Overview

The Cité de l’architecture et du patrimoine stands proudly in the Palais de Chaillot, offering a unique exploration of architectural history and monumental sculpture.

Established in 1879 by the renowned architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, this museum is the largest dedicated to architecture in the world, encompassing 22,000 square meters. Its expansive galleries showcase a rich tapestry of France’s architectural heritage, making it a must-visit for anyone intrigued by design and history.

A Treasure Trove of Exhibits

The museum’s permanent collection is divided into three major galleries. The Galerie des moulages features a stunning array of plaster casts from monumental French architecture dating from the 12th to the 18th centuries, including intricate portals from famous cathedrals. The Galerie des peintures murales et des vitraux offers full-size reproductions of stunning murals and stained glass from Romanesque and Gothic churches, showcasing the artistry of past centuries. Meanwhile, the Galerie moderne et contemporaine presents models and designs from 1850 to the present day, highlighting the evolution of architectural thought and practice.

Supporting Architectural Education

In addition to its impressive exhibits, the Cité also houses the Institut français d’architecture and the École de Chaillot, which focus on promoting contemporary architecture and training architects in the restoration of historical monuments. This makes the museum not only a place of learning for visitors but also a hub for professionals engaged in the architectural field.

A Commitment to Sustainability

The Cité de l’architecture et du patrimoine is deeply invested in fostering sustainable architectural practices. It supports the Global Award for Sustainable Architecture, launched in 2006, which recognizes innovative architects who contribute to environmental and social sustainability. Since 2010, this award has been presented under the patronage of UNESCO.

Educational Outreach and Public Engagement

Through various programs and exhibitions, the museum plays a pivotal role in promoting architectural culture. It invites visitors to engage with the past and present of architecture, encouraging them to think critically about the spaces we inhabit and their implications for future urban development. Whether you are a casual visitor or a dedicated scholar, the Cité offers valuable insights into the built environment.
