About

A Glimpse into Parisian History: From Markets to Modernity

Les Halles de Paris was once the central wholesale market of Paris, thriving for over 800 years as the heart of food distribution. This vast market, known as the “belly of Paris” in Émile Zola’s Le Ventre de Paris, was a lively hub where everything from fresh vegetables to meat and fish was sold.

Designed with majestic steel arches by architect Baltard, the structures were emblematic of industrial Paris during the 19th century. Though the original market was demolished in the 1970s, the area has undergone a significant transformation.

Today, a sprawling underground shopping center, Forum des Halles, sits atop the former market space, combining retail, cultural activities, and leisure facilities.

The Modern Forum Les Halles: A Shopper’s Paradise

At the heart of Les Halles lies Forum Les Halles, one of the busiest shopping centers in France. With over 34 million visitors annually, the mall boasts a wide range of shops, restaurants, and entertainment options, including 26 cinema halls, making it a vibrant hub for both locals and tourists.

The architecture here contrasts sharply with the historic market that once stood on the site, but it remains a vital part of Parisian life, brimming with energy and activity. UGC Ciné Cité Les Halles, the world’s most visited cinema, is located here, attracting movie-goers from around the globe.

Green Oasis: Nelson-Mandela Garden

Amid the urban sprawl, Jardin Nelson-Mandela, formerly known as Jardin des Halles, offers a serene escape. Spanning more than four hectares, this green space is perfect for those looking to unwind while surrounded by contemporary architecture and nature.

The garden’s design incorporates elements that reflect the original market’s spirit, blending history with the present. It’s an ideal spot for relaxation and family activities, with ample space for children to play and events often hosted throughout the year.
