The equestrian statue of Étienne Marcel, located on the southern side of the City Hall of Paris in the Jardin des Combattants-de-la-Nueve, is a significant monument in Paris.
This impressive bronze sculpture pays tribute to Étienne Marcel, a 14th-century provost of the merchants of Paris who played a crucial role in the city’s history.
Created by French sculptor Jean-Antoine-Marie Idrac, the statue was completed after his death by Laurent Marqueste and inaugurated on July 14, 1888, symbolizing the lasting influence of Marcel on the city.
Historical Legacy of Étienne Marcel
Étienne Marcel (1315-1358) was born into a wealthy family of Parisian drapers. He became the provost of the merchants, a position similar to today’s mayor of Paris.
During his tenure, Marcel led the Third Estate (the commoners) in a revolt against the Dauphin Charles in 1355-1356, demanding reforms to limit royal power. Though initially supported by the nobility and the public, his leadership took a violent turn when he orchestrated the murders of two noblemen.
This led to his eventual downfall, and Marcel was assassinated by a loyalist to the crown, Jean Maillard, on July 31, 1358, at the gates of Saint-Antoine.
The Making of the Monument
The statue of Étienne Marcel was a collaborative creation, begun by Antonin Idrac in the 1880s. However, Idrac passed away in 1884 before the work was completed.
The renowned sculptor Laurent Marqueste, known for his neo-Baroque Beaux-Arts style, was entrusted to finish the statue.
Standing in the heart of Paris, the monument was inaugurated in 1888, on Bastille Day, marking a celebration of both the revolutionary spirit of Marcel and the resilience of the city.
A Symbol of Resistance and Reform
The statue of Étienne Marcel depicts the leader on horseback, with a sword in one hand and a scroll in the other, symbolizing both his martial role and his political reforms.
His stance reflects the duality of his legacy—both as a leader who sought to empower the people and a figure whose actions led to his downfall.
